Our Fundraisers.

Volunteers Needed

For the past three years Animal Friends of Connecticut has held a very successful benefit at Flatbreads in Canton. It has been hosted by Scot Haney each year and hundreds of people have attended. Flatbread's holds a benefit every Tuesday evening and said that Animal Friends of Connecticut has raised more money than any other organization thus far

As we prepare for this year's benefit which is scheduled to be held in late Spring we need volunteers to help put it on

First we need 3 members who will be willing to collect 20 donations for the silent auction from the businesses that they frequent. It can be from restaurants, hair salons, spas, car repair facilities, sports venues, etc. Anything is fair game

We then need several people to help set up and tear down the evening of the event

And lastly, any member who has something of value, preferably new items still in the original packaging that they would like to donate to the auction, it would be greatly appreciated. This is a perfect cause to regift to.   Our goal is to collect 100 items for the auction this year

If you are interested in volunteering or donating, please call Judy at 860-827-0381

Animal Friends held two tag sales in 2011, we enjoyed absolutely perfect weather during our spring sale and hoped it would last. Well, as everyone knows, Tropical Storm Irene hit and what a mess she made of the fall sale! Our great team of volunteers worked hard to clean up the mess and the sale went on as scheduled. Unfortunately, the Farmington River didn't cooperate and part of the road was closed during much of the duration of the sale due to flooding. In spite of these challenges, our hardy donors made it in to drop off many wonderful items to sell, our sale volunteers worked their usual long hours and we were glad to see many of our regular customers and meet some new ones.

As many of our readers are aware, we have an open donation drop-off policy and run an 'honor sale' after each sale, during which shoppers may come at their leisure, garages are open for shoppers to peruse sale leftovers and leave money on an 'honor' system. I regret to tell you that, after more than 7 years of success with this practice, we experienced several thefts from the garages and sale area last summer. On at least 4 occasions, thieves have stolen a tent, an expensive, donated electric heater, a wheelbarrow, stepladders, tarp and other small items. After the fall sale, someone stole two sale tables and a cart. Total losses are over $350.00. I feel that we have no choice but to discontinue the honor sale in 2012. Garage doors will have to remain closed to discourage theft, so donors of sale items may need to contact me if doors are too heavy to lift. If you have been a donor in years past, please continue to set aside your lovely items. I will make every effort to make donation delivery convenient for you. Instead of the honor sale, we will donate leftover items to charities or hold them over for the next  AFOC sale.

Have you considered holding a tag sale at your own home to benefit Animal Friends of CT? It really is a lot of fun and can be as big or modest as you like. I have enjoyed hosting the sales (and shopping them as well!). In 2012, I will only be able to host the spring sale at the Simsbury site. If you have ever thought of  hosting a sale yourself, please call me or email me. I'd be glad to share tables, signs, etc.

It is not too early to start setting aside treasures for the AFOC spring tag sale, which is scheduled for the weekend of June 1-3, 2012. Donations can be delivered to the sale site at 159 Nod Rd. Weatogue (Simsbury) site starting May 1, 2012. Please consider donating high end items for our boutique. Please remember that we cannot accept used clothing, large pieces of furniture, excercise equipment, anything containing flammables or freon. Feel free to contact me at 860-833-7674 or akoiv1@hotmail.com with any questions.

In closing, many many thanks to our wonderful donors and volunteers: Paine's, Inc (dumpster), Pickin' Patch (parking), First Church of Christ, Simsbury and Kim Chagnon, Jerry and Jane Hikel, Lauren Fisher, Brenda Rock, Vicki Kayser, Marianne Heymann, Rise Cappadona, Karen Wendhiser, Sandra Pouliot, Ron Carubba, Pat Hirschy, Ruth Woodford, Donna Neary, Barbara Korzendorfer, Nicole DeLong, Willa Nemetz, Eileen Perry, Olga and Bill Coffey.

Animal Friends once again had its annual fall bake sale on Saturday, October 22nd. in our usual spot, right outside the produce entrance of the

Simsbury Stop & Shop,

 530Bushy Hill Road.

We wish to thank Erica Elbert and Ruth Woodford for their tireless work behind the tables accepting baked goods, conducting sales and accepting donations. There were also other familiar faces assisting them. Year after year, we have sustained a marvelous success rate thanks to all of you. This fund raiser is of such benefit to our shelter residents and it was fun for us to see you there knowing you are supporting us.

CYCLING FOR CHARITY

AFOC volunteers will be cycling to raise money for AFOC at the Charity Cycling Challenge March 26 at Healthtrax in Bristol. The CCC`s mission is to provide support for those in need throughout local communities, while promoting the importance of a fit and healthy lifestyle. The CCC began in 2008 as a small fitness event, and given its growth each year in the number of participants as well as the funds raised for charity, it has now become a well-established community event. Since its inception, over $40,000 has been received in charitable donations for both local and national organizations. You can help by donating, joining their team, or creating your own team! For more information E-mail ginger.kunkle@gmail.com. To start your own team or to learn more about the challenge, visit www.charitycyclingchallenge.com.
